These initiatives are brought forward both on an institutional level and a public opinion level.

World Diabetes Day

The World Diabetes Day is the main global campaign for the prevention and the diffusion of information on diabetes, instituted in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and by the World Health Organization (WHO). In Italy, it is organized by the Associazione Diabete Italia (Italian Diabetes Association), together with patient associations, and with the voluntary participation of doctors, nurses, and other health operators. The World Diabetes Day has the patronage of the Ministry of Health. Since 2009, the UN has with a resolution inserted the 14th of November in the calendar of World Days sponsored by it.?

Manifesto of the rights of the person with diabetes

The Manifesto of the rights of the person with diabetes represents one of the concrete answers to the “call to action” that have emerged from the D.A.W.N. (Diabetes Attitudes, Wishes and Needs) report, a research launched in Italy in 2006 to become acquainted with and deepen the psycho-social dynamics of persons with diabetes, and sets itself as a further declination of the more wide project tied to the Changing Diabetes Barometer, the “instrument” based on national and international parameters aimed at measuring the state of the art of diabetes and of its cure.
It is the first document expressly thought to safeguard in a specific way the rights of the person with diabetes, on the basis of principles already enucleated in the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Man and in the European Charter of the Rights of the Ill.
In 2009, the Manifesto was undersigned jointly by the President of Diabete Italia, Professor Paolo Cavallo Perin, and by the Senator Paolo Tommassini, President of the Parliamentary Association for the safeguard and promotion of the right to prevention. To this bipartisan fellowship, deputies and senators participate who are interested in guaranteeing in our system the application of the constitutional principle of the right to health.
